Daveigh Chase, Lilo & Stitch Actress, Dead at 35

Daveigh Chase, the former child actress best known for voicing Lilo Pelekai in Disney's Lilo & Stitch and for portraying Samara Morgan in the horror film The Ring, has died at the age of 35. Multiple news organizations confirmed her death on June 17–18, 2026.

According to statements provided by family members and individuals close to Chase, she died on June 16, 2026, following complications from bacterial meningitis and a serious blood infection that progressed into sepsis and ultimately caused organ failure.

The death was first widely reported by TMZ after comments from her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez. Later reports from the Associated Press and other outlets cited Chase's father, John David Schwallier, who also stated that complications from meningitis and a blood infection led to her death.

On June 29th, 2026, reports from the Coroner's Office in Los Angeles said she passed away due to AIDS.

Chase was born on July 24, 1990, and grew up in Oregon. She became one of the most recognizable child performers of the early 2000s. In 2002, she voiced Lilo in Disney's animated film Lilo & Stitch, earning praise for her portrayal of the spirited Hawaiian girl. That same year, she appeared as the terrifying Samara Morgan in The Ring, a role that earned her an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain.

Beyond those iconic performances, Chase voiced Chihiro in the English-language version of Spirited Away, appeared as Samantha Darko in Donnie Darko, and portrayed Rhonda Volmer in HBO's Big Love.

Reports indicate that Chase had faced significant personal struggles in recent years and had largely stepped away from acting. Several outlets reported that she had been hospitalized in Los Angeles earlier in June and was suffering from severe health complications prior to her death.

Her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans who grew up with Lilo & Stitch, Spirited Away, and The Ring. At just 35 years old, Chase leaves behind a body of work that remains influential to a generation of filmgoers and animation fans.
